Zaner-Bloser / Highlights, supporting Google’s Be Internet Awesome program
Stefani Roth at Zaner-Bloser brought us a clear challenge: extend the Highlights and Google Be Internet Awesome experience beyond the magazine, giving children more ways to practice online safety with their families and educators.
The assignment included 50 short learning activities, divided equally between home and classroom use, and a companion website that made those resources easy to find. Each activity needed to connect to one of the program’s five pillars and work in ten minutes or less, with flexibility for different ages and abilities.
As Creative Director, my focus was creating a consistent experience across the materials and website, bringing together the familiar Highlights look and feel, Google’s Be Internet Awesome Internauts, and clear, engaging activities for children ages 7–12.
Our illustrations reflected a range of children and familiar situations, making lessons about online choices feel relevant to their lives. Working within the established Highlights and Google identities, we connected activities, illustration, video, and the website through a consistent creative approach.
The tight schedule called for clear decisions and close collaboration. Shared templates and focused review rounds helped the team move efficiently while keeping the learning experience at the center of the work.

The Result
Our team created 50 learning activities and a companion website to help families and educators bring online safety lessons into everyday learning.
By April 2026, the Highlights + Google.org partnership had reached 1 million students in grades 2–5 through Be Internet Awesome classroom kits distributed to 10,000 schools nationwide. We’re proud to have contributed learning activities to those kits, giving children practical ways to build confidence and make thoughtful choices online. Families and educators can still explore the activities at Be Internet Awesome.
