Challenge

The Aspen Institute’s Commission needed to communicate why social, emotional, and academic development belong together in education.

Strategy

The Commission sought to move social and emotional learning beyond the idea of an optional program and toward a fuller understanding of how learning works. Communications needed to reach educators, families, researchers, philanthropists, policymakers, and partners. Design helped make the evidence and recommendations accessible while keeping audience-specific publications connected to one larger story.

Creative Approach

The work translated complex ideas into publications, presentations, social graphics, and launch materials for different audiences. Hatcher’s wider engagement included communications support and a microsite for the final report.

My Role

Creative Director, collaborating with Debbie Rappaport, Khanh Pham, and Hatcher’s communications team. My contribution also included hands-on design.

The Approach

Insight into ideas.
Ideas into experience.

Frame the Larger Idea

Build the communications around the relationship between social, emotional, and academic development, rather than treating them as separate priorities.

Make Evidence Easier to Use

Use editorial hierarchy, information design, and coordinated publications to help different audiences find the material relevant to their role.

Support a Connected Launch

Carry the visual system into report-release materials, social graphics, and the microsite, supporting the wider team’s media and partner outreach.
